The latest figure from Alpine Miniatures is sculpted by the masterful John Rosengrant, with the box art being done by another master, Mr Calvin Tan. This is a team of dreamers! We have information on the 16th scale figure, plus photos of the assembled resin kit painted and unpainted here in our preview.
Fist, the Subject: The Alamo Scouts of WWII
The Alamo Scouts were also known as the U.S. Sixth Army Special Reconnaissance Unit. They were an elite combat force during World War II. They were sent behind enemy lines in order to gather vital intelligence that was needed by U.S. Army Special Missions throughout the Pacific. Rescue missions were conducted for individuals or groups. While not on missions, Alamo Scout teams were assigned as bodyguards for their General Krueger and had specific instructions to kill the general if capture was imminent. Below: 6th Rangers move through the grass to take up positions prior to the raid on the Cabanatuan Prison compound. After the rescue, the Nellist and Rounsaville Teams, with Filipino guides, led the Rangers to their positions and protected the escape of 513 Dutch POWs. In a nighttime attack, the scouts worked with Filipino guerrillas and elements of 6th Ranger Battalion to free 513 Dutch POWs. Scouts supported the 6th Ranger Battalion with reconnaissance and tactics during their raid on the Cabanatuan Prison Camp. Scouts conducted reconnaissance on the POW camp before the 6th Rangers raided the camp. Two of the Scouts posed as Filipino rice farmers before the raid. The two scouts set up an observation post in a small shack hidden within the surrounding rice fields. The hidden observation post at the fence of the POW camp was only a few hundred feet from Japanese Army guard posts. The Japanese never found out that the scouts had been there. The Scouts were credited with the capture of 84 Japanese prisoners of war, and only two Scouts were wounded in the mission.

Near the end of the war Alamo Scout teams were preparing for the invasion of Japan, where they were slated to conduct pre-invasion reconnaissance of Kyushu as part of Operation Downfall, but the war ended.

The Alamo Scouts performed 110 known missions behind enemy lines, mainly in New Guinea and the Philippines, without losing a single man. The unit was disbanded at Kyoto, Japan, in November 1945.

The new figure from Alpine Miniatures:
This figure is sculpted by John Rosengrant. The sculptor is a master at capturing the essence of a person, yet he does not have a signature that can be identified. He sculpts faces that are very realistic, but they seem to show a different emotion every time (at least to us). The figure is available in unassembled light gray resin parts with two choices of headgear, as all Alpine Miniatures figures are. The figure is shown below, unpainted, so that you can see all the details. Pay attention to how the clothing, equipment and body parts fit and pinch, as well as the way they sit and pull on the male’s frame. Two Army Alamo Scouts in HBT Uniforms similar to the one this figure wears. Cape Kassoe, Hollandia, DNG. This figure shows only the head with the peaked hat. Also included is the head without hat. The details on the figure, such as his watch and the buttons and tabs in his pockets and collars are striking. They were used by a wide variety of Marines to serve in the tropical jungles of South Pacific. The carbine was praised by soldiers in the Pacific theatre for its size, weight and power. Other soldiers and marines who engaged in daily firefights, especially those in the Philippines, found that the weapon had insufficient penetration and stopping power. On the belt of this Scout, you will see the lightweight cotton in khaki, the Jungle Medical Kit, the M-2, and the Combat Knife. Calvin Tan’s photos show how his HBT uniform is pressed into his boon Dockers. The wrinkles are begging for a great paint job.
